Sometimes, music can be so "full" of "stuff" (notes, flags, sharps, and other twists and turns), we can get lost in trying to play it. Taking a few moments to clap out a rhythm however, helps us associate notes with a unique time signature -- a time signature that could at any moment, change right in the middle of a song!

3) Count out loud if you have to.

This strategy follows the hand clapping and foot tapping strategy above, except that counting aloud helps strengthen the concept of rhythm in our minds. When we repeat 1 -2 -3 -4 over and over, that pattern sticks and flows from our fingers. It's best to count aloud while looking at the music you're playing. The relationship between the notes you see and the beats that they represent will become clearer as a result.

4) Use a metronome.

Metronomes are pretty much standard staples when it comes to playing music. You would be hard pressed in fact, to stay on beat without one! A metronome is programmed to produce a steady beat for a prolonged period of time, so they make perfect tools for strengthening adherence to certain beats.

5) Play the piano in your mind while doing something else.

Just for fun, you could use the sounds in your environment as a basis for a new rhythm. Imagine the sounds created in the office environment. A person typing... someone walking down the hall... a printer grinding out 20 sheets of music... you get the point. Pick any one of these songs and then play your imaginary piano to the rhythm of the sound that you're hearing. Even if the rhythm speeds up or slows down, the goal in this little exercise is to keep playing the music on time, no matter how much the beat sways.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome - Can Playing the Piano Cause Carpal Tunnel Symptoms?

I was contacted by Jeanne, a serious student of piano who has developed carpal tunnel symptoms.

She doesn't want to quit playing her piano but is having problems keeping up with her work because of her carpal tunnel pain. She told me that her teacher was helping her with correct positioning of her arms and hands.

Often, when we have carpal tunnel pain, there is much more going on than most people realize.

Here is my response to Jeanne.

Well, first I'll address the proper positioning of your arms. Realize that I have absolutely no knowledge of piano playing, only of how a body develops carpal tunnel and other pain symptoms.

To prevent carpal tunnel pain, just like working at a desk, your back should be straight, no hunching allowed. You need to sit with your natural curve at the back of your waist (tummy sticking out a bit.) Your head should be over your shoulders, not in front of your body.

Your elbows should be close to your waist, but I know they will move around a lot. Better to move your body side to side (sway) than stretch with your arms. That way, your large body muscles are being used rather than your smaller arm and hand muscles.

When you play, your wrists should be straight, or flat, not tilted up or down. Hold your elbows at right angles, but slightly open.

Is it possible that your piano bench is not the correct height for you? That is important. Your feet should rest flat on the floor or on a support.

But here are my two biggest suggestions.

1. Since your muscles are already aggravated, having therapeutic massage would be of great benefit. Perhaps you could go for a couple of half hours a week to help settle down your strained arm muscles. Massage helps muscles and soft tissues normalize much, much more quickly than stretching, heat, or other modalities. Massaging the muscles gets in there and gets your blood and other body fluids moving. This relaxes the muscles, breaks up restrictions and gets them on the road to health and balance again.

2. This one is big:

There are muscles in your neck called the scalenes. If you have a forward head posture, and especially if your shoulders are also held forward, rather than at the sides of your body (rounded upper back?) then there is an excellent chance that your scalene muscles are causing your carpal tunnel symptoms.

The scalenes will also cause a "knot" between your shoulder blades and your spine.

A knowledgeable massage therapist or physical therapist can also help you with correcting your postural muscles and can release the scalene muscles, but they don't all know how to do those things. You have to search out the appropriate therapist.

So, Jeanne, without being able to see you, those are my guesses and thoughts.

I suspect your posture may need some attention, and that your "forward head" is causing symptoms in your arms and hands.

I don't want you to suffer or have to quit piano, and I do not believe that you will have to do either.

Bodies are truly remarkable. They want to be well and sometimes just need a little help. If you understand why you are having carpal tunnel symptoms (symptoms are caused by something we either do or do not do) then you can take the necessary steps to help your body get well.

Will it take some of your time? Yes.

Will it be worth it for your future happiness? Yes.

I am often asked by parents of young children what is the best age to begin piano lessons. Well, although I have seen children as young as four start to learn to play piano it is a tall order for most so young to cope with the physical and mental demands.

I specialize in a course designed for very small children which uses a lot of singing and all round musical tuition, but there are the physical hold ups of tiny hands that just aren't ready to use the fingers independently and most children will progress much faster and therefore enjoy the experience much more if they are around six.

It may appear obvious, but there is a marked difference between a five and six year old learning to play piano. It's not just hand size to reach the piano notes but ability to concentrate too. Basic knowledge in other ways of the world makes a big difference too. For example, knowing the first seven letters of the alphabet.

A lot depends 'though on the course offered and the skill of the teacher. When I teach the very little ones I encourage their parents to sit in on the lessons and help to guide their child. I can then lead from the front of the class whilst parents can help to guide their child's hands in to place on the keyboards whilst I move around the class to check that all is well.

Lessons for the very young need to be fast and flexible. Singing, and perhaps even dancing help to develop children's musical skills. Even most adults will find it difficult to concentrate for long if the work is intense.

It not only takes skills in the movements that we produce with our fingers, but our brains have just such a lot to assimilate and analyze. It's only when you think that you're asking a very small child to read two languages at the same time, use their two hands in totally different directions and then put expression and feeling into the music that you begin to realize what a task it is.

I therefore have all praise and admiration whenever I see a six year old, who probably has difficulty reading English, make a success of playing the piano. There are lots of children of this age who cope very well, however. It's wonderful to see a small child learning to sit comfortably at the piano and looking at ease as they play their simple but challenging pieces.

To summarize, therefore, I would say that, on average, seven would be the ideal time to start to play the piano. The child is old enough and physically big enough to cope with the academic work and the size of the keys on the instrument but a keen, musical six year old from a supportive family would probably be far more successful than a sullen eleven year old who is being pushed into learning by eager parents.

Each child and each piano teacher is different. Don't worry too much if the first attempt of getting your child off to a musical start doesn't seem to work out. They have plenty of time and opportunity ahead of them and if the door is left open they can return to and enjoy the experience of making music when their time is right.

I am personally one of the biggest lovers of relaxing and calming piano tunes. The best relaxing piano tunes I love right now most include Clair de Lune by Debussy. I find that they stimulate my inner self easily and more deeply than any other kind of music.

Perhaps I am just one of the many people who get stressed easily and need this kind of calming music to feed my soul and body.

For me, I believe the best way to listen to such type of music instantly is through the Internet. We can search beautiful and relaxing tunes on iTunes and even YouTube! Plenty of great music pieces are uploaded to YouTube on a daily basis and I have found plenty of great songs and tunes on the video portal. I am sure you will find plenty of positive surprises there.

Pretty frustrating film. I'm not particulary proud of it, but hey, what the hell, it helped me learn. A lot (just take the number of mistakes into account, I feel embarased!) I had two hours to shoot this piece. And all went worng (except for yhe pianist scene). Most of the people I showed it to couldn't even get the story. Plus, the Lamp Guy: dude was drunk. Heavily! And I just couldn't get to do the shots were I wanted to. The flick did grant me a good grade in college. I just hope I do better next time. A five-year-old could do this ! Honestly. See it for yourselves. By the way, the story's something like this. There's a concert in a piano bar somewhere (pretty sleezy huh?) and the pianist comes thinking that she's late. She sits down, but then she realizes that she hasno audience. She storms out of the building. A little time later the audience comes in. Everybody's wondering where the artist is and the Lamp Guy (I call him the Lam Guy because he's always doing something with the lamps, couldn't get a better name, sorry 'bout that folks), who also happens to be the proprietor of that particular place (still sleezy huh?) turns to one of the spectators and he points to the janitor, who had just come in to clean the "stage". Piano Chords for Beginners 5: Learn How to Play Major and Minor Piano Chords in One Easy Lesson

In this free beginner piano lesson, learn the difference between Major and Minor chords and how to play them quickly and easily!

When you listen to popular piano music, what creates the tone or the atmosphere of the song? Why are some songs bright and cheerful, such as the Beatles' 'The Yellow Submarine' or 'When I'm Sixty Four'? And why are other songs filled with sadness and pathos, such as the Beatles' 'Yesterday' or 'The Fool on the Hill'?

Much of the difference is due to the common use of Major chords in the cheerful songs, and Minor chords in the sad songs.

Basic Major and Minor chords are just three notes played together. So it is fascinating that this dramatic difference in tone, between a Major chord and a Minor chord, is achieved by just a slight adjustment of one of the three notes in the chord!

How to Make a Minor Chord from a Major Chord

To construct a Minor chord, you take the corresponding Major chord and simply lower the middle note by one half-step or semitone.

On your piano or keyboard, the keys that are directly adjacent to one another are one half-step or one semitone apart. The adjacent note can be either black or white. So to lower a note by one half-step or semitone you simply go down to the next adjacent piano key on the left.

For example if you lower the following notes by one half-step:

-- F# becomes F,

-- A becomes Ab,

-- C becomes B, and

-- F becomes E.

Let's Look at an Example

We saw in our article in this series about how to play 'Away in a Manger', that:

-- the D Major chord is: D F# A.

To find the D Minor chord, you lower the middle note of the D Major chord by one half-step or semitone from F# to F. Therefore,

-- the D Minor chord is: D F A.

Play these two chords one after the other and hear how different their tone is!

Chords are represented by chord symbols in books of popular piano music. Here are the chord symbols for these two chords:

-- D Major chord: D

-- D Minor chord: Dm

What About All the Other Types of Chords?

If you look in a book of popular music, such as one of those in Hal Leonard's Fake Book series, you will see many other types of chords that are used in the accompaniments. These include Seventh chords, Sixth chords, Diminished chords, Augmented chords and Suspended chords.

In a similar way to the relationship between the Major and Minor chords, all of these other chord types have simple relationships with one another. It is quite easy to learn to play all of these chord types without reading complex musical scores, memorizing huge numbers of individual chords or counting up endless rows of half-steps or semitones.

Once you understand the simple key that unlocks the huge variety of piano chords, you can learn beautiful embellishment techniques for these chords. Then you can create your own unique accompaniments for your favorite style of popular music - with ease!
