Electric Guitar Lessons - Where Should I Begin? (Otherwise You'll Waste Time)

The first thing that most people want to do when they start electric guitar lessons is to learn how to play that songs they hear on the radio or on their favorite CDs.  The problem is that, in my years of playing experience, it can be more frustrating to start off with that goal in mind than to have a more reasonable objective.  Playing the guitar requires technique, practice, and an understanding of how to properly apply pressure to a string to get the sound you want.  Learning how to play your favorite song right away would be frustrating because you lack the basics needed to create the sounds you hear, and it is also the wrong way to go about.

The correct way to go about getting electric guitar lessons is to find someone with experience that offers lessons, and train with that player.  Make sure that your teacher is interested in the same genres of music as you, because a beginner will feel most comfortable with something they are more familiar with.  As you advance in your lessons, it would be a good idea to branch out other genres to try and add some different sounds to your playing.  A good music teacher that is familiar with your favorite genre of music is the best way to start off.

The first thing you will notice about electric guitar lessons from someone who knows how to teach, is that it will start of very basic and very simple.  It is possible that after the first lesson your teacher will have you playing parts of songs, but they will be songs that fit your learning curve and can help you reach your goal of being able to learn your favorite songs.  Once you have the basics of playing the electric guitar, you can then start to experiment on your own and see what kinds of things you can figure out for yourself as opposed to your teacher showing you.

One of the really fun things about electric guitar lessons is hearing your guitar make that chord progression, or that note, that you hear on your favorite albums.  If you are patient and give lessons a chance, then you will find learning on your own to be much easier.  But take the time to lay a strong foundation for your guitar-playing future, and make sure to take some lessons of the basics of playing the electric guitar.
