Piano Chords for Beginners 5: Learn How to Play Major and Minor Piano Chords in One Easy Lesson

In this free beginner piano lesson, learn the difference between Major and Minor chords and how to play them quickly and easily!

When you listen to popular piano music, what creates the tone or the atmosphere of the song? Why are some songs bright and cheerful, such as the Beatles' 'The Yellow Submarine' or 'When I'm Sixty Four'? And why are other songs filled with sadness and pathos, such as the Beatles' 'Yesterday' or 'The Fool on the Hill'?

Much of the difference is due to the common use of Major chords in the cheerful songs, and Minor chords in the sad songs.

Basic Major and Minor chords are just three notes played together. So it is fascinating that this dramatic difference in tone, between a Major chord and a Minor chord, is achieved by just a slight adjustment of one of the three notes in the chord!

How to Make a Minor Chord from a Major Chord

To construct a Minor chord, you take the corresponding Major chord and simply lower the middle note by one half-step or semitone.

On your piano or keyboard, the keys that are directly adjacent to one another are one half-step or one semitone apart. The adjacent note can be either black or white. So to lower a note by one half-step or semitone you simply go down to the next adjacent piano key on the left.

For example if you lower the following notes by one half-step:

-- F# becomes F,

-- A becomes Ab,

-- C becomes B, and

-- F becomes E.

Let's Look at an Example

We saw in our article in this series about how to play 'Away in a Manger', that:

-- the D Major chord is: D F# A.

To find the D Minor chord, you lower the middle note of the D Major chord by one half-step or semitone from F# to F. Therefore,

-- the D Minor chord is: D F A.

Play these two chords one after the other and hear how different their tone is!

Chords are represented by chord symbols in books of popular piano music. Here are the chord symbols for these two chords:

-- D Major chord: D

-- D Minor chord: Dm

What About All the Other Types of Chords?

If you look in a book of popular music, such as one of those in Hal Leonard's Fake Book series, you will see many other types of chords that are used in the accompaniments. These include Seventh chords, Sixth chords, Diminished chords, Augmented chords and Suspended chords.

In a similar way to the relationship between the Major and Minor chords, all of these other chord types have simple relationships with one another. It is quite easy to learn to play all of these chord types without reading complex musical scores, memorizing huge numbers of individual chords or counting up endless rows of half-steps or semitones.

Once you understand the simple key that unlocks the huge variety of piano chords, you can learn beautiful embellishment techniques for these chords. Then you can create your own unique accompaniments for your favorite style of popular music - with ease!

Which Piano Brands Are Best For Beginners?

Figuring out the best possible brand of piano to purchase for a player that is just beginning can be a pretty difficult task depending on the particular situation. No one can come right out and tell you what piano to buy, it's a decision that you must work your way to with a good bit of research.

There are a number of questions that you should ask yourself before jumping into a purchase that may be as major as buying a piano.

Has the beginner ever played before?

If the beginner that you are considering buying a piano for has never so much as played the instrument before and there is no one else residing in the house that will play, some serious thought should be put into the decision. In fact, if this is a situation that you are currently facing, it might be advisable, if possible, for the beginner to take a few lessons at a studio or to purchase a less expensive, electronic keyboard to begin with to be sure that the beginner will hold some interest in the endeavor after the initial novelty begins to wear off.

The last thing you want to do is go out and spend more that twenty thousand dollars on a very large instrument that will take up quite a bit of space in your home only to find that there is no real deep interest there. A keyboard is a good, inexpensive and portable learning tool that will help you gage if there is a real interest there, and it will still be of use later down the road after a full size piano is procured.

What fits my situation?

If you are sure that purchasing a piano is the right decision, then you've got some serious studying to do.

In all reality, the best brand of piano for your beginner is going to be the one that fits your particular situation, in terms of price, size and sound quality.

There are plenty of excellent manufacturers of pianos available in every imaginable style and price range: Steinway, Wurlitzer, Kawai and Yamaha each have different musical quality and each manufacturer comes with a potentially very different price tag (Steinway produces pianos that are well in excess of six figures, where as Yamaha produces a quality instrument for under twenty thousand dollars.) Each brand will have a style, sound and price that will appeal to different types of players.

Pianos come in two different "body types", uprights and grand pianos. Grand pianos normally produce a better sound quality, but uprights are often far less expensive and easier to fit into your home.

You'll want to visit plenty of show rooms, do a lot of testing out different brands and talking to a good deal of sales people, teachers and technicians in order to narrow down the possibilities and begin to select the piano that may be right for you. You want a brand that has good merit, a solid reputation and that offers a good warranty.

Once you've got a manufacturer in mind that you feel comfortable with, it's time to pick the most appropriate model for your situation - if at all possible, try not to buy the manufacturer's least expensive model. It's no secret that the cheapest model in terms of cost is probably the manufacturer's model that is also of the lowest quality, a few hundred to one thousand dollars price difference could mean a world in the difference of quality of the instrument.

Don't despair that you can't afford the world's greatest piano right from the beginning, many reputable manufacturers have a "trade up" option that will allow you to upgrade to a better model when you feel that you may have outgrown your current piano

When it comes to buying a piano, as with making any other major purchase you want to be armed with information -ask a lot of questions and buy what you can afford. Pick a manufacturer that has a trade up option so you'll always be able to have the best possible piano for your situation.

Piano Lessons For Beginners - A New Approach

If you're interested in learning how to play the piano and you're a beginner listen up. What I'm about to share with you will have you playing the piano in no time at all.

First off, forget about note reading. Forget about sheet music and trying to play Bach or Beethoven. While all of these have their place in piano lessons for beginners, it's not what I'm going to teach you. I promised you a new approach and that's exactly what this article will deliver.

Take a look at my free piano lesson "Reflections in Water," (available by clicking below.) The first thing you probably will notice is the title followed by what this lesson will teach you to do - namely using open position chords in the Key of C major to create a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

Notice anything here? This piano lesson actually looks like an art lesson doesn't it! It's completely different as it takes you step by step through the process of actually creating your own music.

After you notice the title and the description of the lesson, you may also notice a small paragraph of text to the left that reads "materials used." Again, like an art lesson, you see exactly what you'll be using to create with. At the beginning of most art lessons, the author introduces you to the materials and techniques you'll be using to complete a finished painting. That's exactly what I do with piano instruction.

And my students love it. It gets them playing piano almost right away. Plus, it allows them to create music with modern sounding chords instead of the usual boring triads.

Note reading is not required for this approach. Just a little knowledge of chords. For the lesson "Reflections in Water," you'll see 4 chords and the keyboard diagrams they are laid out on. Once you get the feel for the open position chord, you'll love it and want to play the piano with enthusiasm. Why? Because it's fun! And it's easy.

And if that wasn't enough to get you motivated, there are also audio samples that let you hear how another pianist plays it.

Piano lessons for beginners do not have to be the same old boring thing most of us have come to know. They can actually be fun AND creative!

Beginners Guide to play Piano Chords

The piano is the perfect tool designed for playing chords. E 'visually simple, easy to understand layout makes it easy for students beginning to learn piano, how to play chords. Unlike other instruments like the guitar does not need to learn to use your fingers so strange and unnatural to play just to forgive the simple combinations of notes.

In contrast, the basic chords of the piano seem almost magicaldesigned to be played by man. When you learn to piano, the pianist is just the beginning of the structures of these basic agreements and a world that opens up to learn to play harmonica.

To get started, even though they are technically called agreements, combinations of two notes - usually as a "pause" or "dyads" - are also on the piano music to be seen. Although not technically agreements, combinations of two notes is essentially the foundation of all musicHarmony. If so learn how to play chords, but it is also a good idea for students of the first distance learning.

The smallest interval of the Western musical scale is the second child, which is composed of two notes, which are only half a step apart - for example, and the next EF, or B and C. Even if the next, there are several possibilities for breaks, they are called more frequently, as follows, in descending order of magnitude:

1. Small seconds
2. Major second
3. Minorthird
4. Major third
5. Perfect fourth
6. Augmented fourth (or diminished fifth)
7. Quinte
8. Minor sixth (or augmented fifth)
9. Sixth
10. Minor seventh
11. Major seventh
12. Perfect octave

They have to learn all at once, but most pianists must then learn. Also, there are similar names for intervals of more than one octave, but they do not come often enough.

When learning to play chords,Many students start with triads, to be considered the most elementary form of three agreements. In essence, while the intervals are the foundation of all musical harmony, triads are the starting point for more complex harmonies. Are also pleasantly simple and easy to play. For example, if you play with the fingers of his right hand on the first five notes of the scale of C major - C, D, E, F and G - then thumb and middle finger and little finger are already able to do the major triad.

YourKnowledge of the intervals is useful when learning triads, of which there are four types:

1. Major triad a major third plus a minor third (eg, CEG).
2. Minor triad: A minor third plus a major third (eg, ACE).
3. Diminished triad, a minor third plus a minor third (for example, BDF).
4. Augmented chord: A major third plus a major third (eg, CEG).

Decreased and increased triads occur much less frequently than major and minor triads, especially in the waybe played by piano music in general from the beginning. This will make more sense if you play and practice triads, major and minor triads sound familiar and comfortable for the ear when the sound is diminished and augmented triads foreign and dissonant.

Meanwhile, it is important to understand the description of the triads. In short, all known for their tonic triads - the note which starts the rope ladder on the base. For example, the minor triad ACE is called "Aminors, "because it is on the A-minor scale on the main triad of the FAC, as" F major "because it is based on the F-major scale: the diminished triad of Bb DF is a B" in large "and so on.

Beyond intervals and triads, the scope and terms of the agreements of the plan become little more layered and complex. The number of things that need to learn how you can contribute daunting at first, but it is always important to remember that learning to play chords in a series ofBaby Steps. For example, shortly after learning of the triads Maybe you want to reverse string, or learn the triads into seventh chords again. Both techniques, although more and more advanced, are relatively easy to own. So, if learning to stick with one thing at a time and soon will be in all these bizarre chord notations are everywhere exchanged.
