Piano Lesson Videos and YouTube - A Perfect Match!

If you've ever visited YouTube you already know how easy they've made it to view videos online. No more waiting for movies to download. No server crashes or time spent counting the seconds until it actually loads.

Yes, they've made it easy for anyone to upload their visions and ideas to the web. In fact, they have an entire section devoted to "how to" do something.

Recently, I uploaded my first video to YouTube. It's titled "Piano Lessons: December Twilight."

And with this video (hopefully) I show you how to create a piano improvisation in the Key of A Major using an ostinato pattern in the left hand while your right improvises melody.

I used something called a point and shoot camcorder by Pure Digital. And for $89 from Target, I have to say that it's quite something!

I positioned the little camcorder in one of my lamps (believe it or not) and sat down and recorded my first video piano lesson.

The great thing about YouTube is that viewers can tell you what they think. If they like it they can rate it using a star system and/or leave comments -both good and bad.

The other great thing about watching videos on YouTube is that you can watch them over and over again. This is especially helpful for learning something. You can pause and even skip ahead to wherever you want.

The maximum file size allowed on YouTube is 100 MB and this gives you at least 10 minutes of video time.

The Taylor Dreadnought

Bob Taylor's love for instruments became very apparent at a young age. He even built his first guitar when he was just 17, in his junior year at high school. It was a 12 string guitar which he called the Dreadnought and he was so pleased with it that he built two more during his senior year.

After graduating high school in 1973, Bob used his experience in building the Dreadnought to acquire a job at American Dream Guitars, a local guitar shop in El Cajon, San Diego. There, he invented his most prestigious contribution to the Taylor guitars--the bolt-on neck. This new design in the most fragile part of the guitar, allowed for much easier neck repair when necessary and in dire situations, replacement.
 
Bob Builds a Business

In 1974 the owner of American Dreams, Sam Radding, decided to sell the business. Bob Taylor teamed up with Kurt Listug and Steven Schemmer to purchase the company and even renamed it Westland Music Company, hoping to brand the business and expand.

Eventually Westland Music Company was changed to Taylor guitars, with Listug stating that Bob was the real guitar maker and that the company should be named as such. At that time, Bob comfortably slid into the design and production portion of business while Listug concentrated on growing their small store into a heavy duty guitar manufacturer.
 
While designing guitars, not only did Bob find more efficient ways to manufacture the guitars in large quantities to keep up with public demand, he also incorporated his new fancy neck, which he called NT (new technology) into his guitars. Now, without the need for a Dove Tail neck piece which is glued into the guitar's body, a bolted neck allowed the fret board to be made of one continual piece of wood. Many artists believe that this greatly improved the solidity and tone of the electric and acoustic guitars. 
 
Along with his unique ideas and creative business practices, Taylor has prided itself on remaining independent and free over their creativity and business since they began.
 
Little Known Facts

       Taylor uses ultraviolet lamps to dry their guitar's lacquer finish in hours instead of weeks.
       Taylor was the first guitar company to use CNC wood routers in their acoustic guitars.
       Taylor employes over 450 people out of El Cajon, California.

Piano Practice Tips For Adults

Piano Lesson - Let Performing Make You A Better Pianist

Performing your piano music can actually be a great way to develop as a pianist. By uplifting others by your music you will at the same time make your practice sessions more effective! You will also allow yourself to play at your peak level!

Many pianists will experience this scenario:

Somebody comes to you at a party or at some other occasion with a lot of people, knowing that you are a pianist, asking you to play something nice for the people around. At this point you feel uncomfortable because you do not have anything to play or the music you possibly could have played will not show you at your peak level. This does not mean that you are a poor player. It just means that you at the present time do not have anything you feel proud to play for other people.

At this point you will excuse yourself and say that you maybe will play some other time. At the same time you feel bad because you actually could have contributed to the party if you only had focused on performing as you practiced at home.

You maybe have practiced on many various things, using scales, chords, messing around on the piano and playing pieces you have practiced before. But, you forgot to actually focus on the people out there waiting for your music to be heard.

The problem is as follows:

1. Nothing to play when people want to hear you play.

2. You are losing motivation to practice because you never use what you practice among people.

3. Your piano practice sessions are unfocused as you do not know what to practice and how to use what you learn.

One solution is to focus your piano practicing sessions on a repertoire with piano music you yourself like to play and see to it that you always are prepared to play at your peak level. Seeing that other people are actually enjoying your playing will increase your motivation to practice and help you master your musical homework.

Let us see what you can do:

1. Building a repertoire. Decide which ones of the piano pieces you have practiced that deserve to be included in your piano repertoire of piano music that you will take time to keep fresh by regular practice and repetition. I think it is not wrong to be a bit affable in this area. Try to include the piano pieces that many people want to hear and learn to play them the way they should be played, that is, correctly and in a musical way. Do not think it is like playing to the gallery as long as you have decided that the music is worth listening to and that you play the music with feeling and concentration.

2. Compose a program with piano music that you will play if someone asks you to play. This program can consist of three pieces of music or more that you want to focus on. It is a satisfying feeling to really be prepared to play when someone asks you and also knowing that you can play something that you have practiced well enough to be able to play at the top of your ability. Peoples opinion of you as a pianist will be more positive as they only will hear you play like any serious artist would, the things you know you have mastered.

3. As you practice these pieces of piano music you will undoubtedly come across musical passages that are so difficult to play that you need to make a decision. Either you will skip this piece of music entirely for the time being and choose a piece of music that are at your present technical level or else you have to work on your technique in order to play the music correctly.

In this case you have to focus on the exact problem you have with the musical passage and decide which area of your technique that has to be improved in order for you to play the passage correctly and with confidence. This way of practicing technical exercises will feel meaningful as they are connected with your repertoire. You know why you use these exercises and you will be able to measure the effectiveness of them by the way they help you improve the performance of the musical passages that motivated you to use these exercises and work on your technique in the first place.

A History of a Musical Instrument - Guitar

Today's mainstream music is unimaginable without a guitar. Although there are many more instruments that are more respected than, the popularity and magic of this one instrument cannot be denied. The Vihuela also evolved through time and took the shape of a 'Baroque Guitar' which is still a popular instrument with the Spaniards.

The Baroque was later enhanced by adding single strings and making it six strings instead of five. It was during the classical period that guitars began to capture some respect. Many famous composers added the instruments to their pieces. The design of the instrument, however, remained somewhat different than the modern guitar.

The first genre of music that actually used the guitar as an essential instrument in its composition was the Blues. This made many violin manufacturers step into the guitar making business. The design of the guitar as we see now is very much the work of Antonio de Torres. He was the first man to use Fan bracings. He did many enhancements along with increasing the size of the guitar. Therefore, we know him as the father of modern guitar.

The rest of the story is not much of a history. Nothing flared the popularity of this instrument more than Rock n Roll era. The advent of electronic guitar started an unending era of Rock music. From cool blues to soft country to rock and roll and now heavy metal, the guitar has dominated every genre of modern music. We have seen legends such as Elvis, Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Slash, and we know that there are still many to come.

Piano is Easy - Playing by Piano Chords

Learning the chord progressions used in piano music can make the difference between having to play note for note like the sheet music is written and having the ability to understand the chord base and knowing where the next notes can be played to make the music you play your own. When learning to play the piano in the traditional sense, you learn one note at a time. You first learn where middle C is located and then you add more notes from there.

The learning you receive allows you to see the note on a piece of sheet music and then be able to transform in your mind where that note relates to the piano keyboard and where you need to press a key to hear that note. What you are not learning is the idea that piano chords have a certain pattern and in order to hear an "A" chord you can only press certain keys and if you press any other, then it is not an "A" chord or does not belong in the "A" chord family and that these chords are repeated over and over again in each octave.

Learning piano in the traditional fashion, one note at at time, has made it difficult for some to learn how to play piano. When learning piano, if you can understand the chord structure and how they work in relation to the piece of music you are playing, you will enhance your knowledge in a very short time frame and be able to understand the piano and the way it works differently than when being trained in the traditional method. You start to understand flow and why the fingers end up on certain keys and not others, you start seeing the patterns.

Most of this video was filmed in my backyard. I wanted to shoot everything for these videos at night, without any real background to the scenes, so Mark suggested we work outdoors with spot lighting. We could tell from the first test shoot that it was going to work, which was a relief. It meant we wouldn't have to scout around for locations too much, or deal with too many outside interferences (or police). I set aside a budget of $200 for the five videos. The bulk of that money went to the 17 desk lamps I bought. The rest went towards masks, objects to set on fire, candles, light bulbs, and other small props. Some of the other props were things I'd been saving, like the piano. That piano died on me a couple months back. I'd planned on setting it on fire, just to see what it would look like, but once we started talking about these videos, I figured we might as well film it. I'm glad we did. Michel Philippot Study Study Michel Philippot This is NOT Yoko Ono. This was done waaaaayyyyyyyy before Yoko Ono. Michel Philippot's Study, which was composed in 1953, is deliberately free of any poetic or literary association. It is an exercise in pure form organised according to serial principles. It was soon after this, in 1948, that Pierre Schaeffer developed his studio and began to experiment with musique concrete. Some of his first pieces include Etude aux Chemins de Fer, Etude aux Tourniquets, Etude au Piano I, and Etude aux Casseroles, which used sounds ranging from locomotives to whistling tops to spinning pan covers. In 1951 a group was created by the RTF to research this new form of music and le Groupe de Recherches Musicales was formed, headed by Pierre Schaeffer. Musique concrete in the beginning was fairly limited. Though a broad range of sounds were used overall, only a few types of sounds were used for each composition. Some compositions in fact had only one sound source. The music created sounded very spacy and eerie. Feeling, as might it should, very futuristic. The composition usually used long drawn out notes, often very low in frequency. There was very little sense of a rhythm; the music just seemed to flow and evolve, and even this, very slowly, creating a very long composition length. The Distinctive Jazz Piano Styles of McCoy Tyner

Alfred McCoy Tyrner, better known by the last two words of his full name - McCoy Tyner, was both on the 11th of December, 1938. His mother pushed him towards his love for the piano, by sending him for piano classes when he was 13 years old. The piano classes got him hooked to the instrument in a couple of years by the time he turned 15. His early inspiration came from the playing of Bud Powell with whom he was neighbors. His playing was distinguished from the other sounds that people have drawn out of the piano.

He had a very distinctive way of playing the bass notes with his left hand, which he positioned higher than the normal posture of piano playing allowed him to so that he could lay heavy emphasis on the notes that he played with that hand. His right hand's style of playing too had a similar catch -the staccatos and arpeggios that he played with his right hand contributed to this unique sound of playing. These two factors and his method of chord voicing, which has a heavy usage of fourth notes, set him apart from many jazz pianists during his career of 46 and running years.

He got his first steady gig with Jazztet in 1960 in which he played with Benny Golson. He left that group the same year and joined John Coltrane's group. But this was not the first time that he was associated with Coltrane. He and Coltrane both played together earlier on McCoys's original composition - The Believer. He was a part of the group's release - My Favorite Things.

The following four years, he toured with the John Coltrane Quartet which featured Coltrane himself on tenor saxophone, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on the drums in addition to McCoy himself in piano. The band had a lot of success and has a number of releases which did very well including Ballads, Life at The Village Vanguard, Crescent, The Jon Coltrane Quartet Plays, and Live at Birdland which they recorded for Impulse! Records.

Apart from playing for the John Coltrane Quartet, he also has a solo career on with a number of piano trio releases under the same label - the first of which was the 1962 release Inception. He was sideman on quite a few albums under the Blue Note Records. After leaving the John Coltrane Quartet, he had a three year stint with Blue Note Records for whom he recorded a number of post bop albums - The Real McCoy, Tender Moments, Expansions and Extensions - during the four years (67' - 70') that he was with Blue Note.

His next label was Milestone Records with whom he recorded a number of albums that he recorded with flute player Hubert Laws and Billy Colham on the drums. Some of their albums that this period of recording produced were Sahara, Enlightenment and Fly With The Wind. The shift in music that he made was a very obvious to the ear move to include music influenced by African and Asian forms of music in his compositions. This warranted for a wider variety of instruments that McCoy used and which he played himself - the koto (a 13th Japanese string instrument), the flute and percussion.

This was one of the first movements in jazz music to move towards a new freer form. This was not categorized as free jazz or fusion jazz. It was something else in the making. One of McCoy's 1975 releases had him play two other instruments that were used very rarely in jazz music to date - the harpsichord and the celeste. The 80's and the 90's saw him touring and recording extensively with bass player Avery Sharpe and Aaron Scott who played the drums.

He had an extended run with Blue Note Records for which he recorded more albums for in the late 80's and early 90's. McCoy is still active recording and touring with different musicians recording for Telarc Records.

He was made a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2002. He has had two releases in 2007 - Quarter and Afro Blue.

Handel Lamp History

Philip Julius Handel first established the Handel Company in Meriden, Connecticut in 1876. They specialized in high quality reverse painted lamp shades and were generally considered a less expensive alternative to the Tiffany lamp popularized by Louis Comfort Tiffany. They also made leaded glass shades similar to Tiffany as well as vases, humidor boxes and other decorative objects. The most popular lamps of the Art Nouveau 1890-1920 and the Art Deco period 1920-1939 were Tiffany, Handel, Pairpoint and Duffner & Kimberly.

Philip Handel (age 19) and Adolph Eydam (age 21) formed a partnership in 1885 and created the "Eydam and Handel Company" in Meriden, Connecticut specializing in glass decorating and lamp manufacturing. They used lamp bases from other suppliers not their own lamp bases. In 1892 the partnership ended and the company later moved to larger facilities in New York city in 1893 and was known as "Philip J. Handel" and later as "Handel and Company". In 1902 they opened their own foundry and began producing their own lamp bases. The Handel Company was incorporated on June 11, 1903 and Philip J. Handel, Albert Parlow, and Antone Teich were the principals. In 1906, Philip J. Handel married Fannie Hirschfield Handel his second wife. She became the company's president upon Philip Handel's death in 1914. In 1918 she remarried and in 1919 William F. Handel, Philip's cousin took control of the company.

Following World War I was a period of tremendous growth. The economy was roaring and the company had assembled a very impressive and talented group of artists and craftsmen. However, the Great Depression drastically changed the company's fortunes and by 1929 the company was struggling. The company ceased production completely in 1936. The Handel Lamp Company was the very finest maker of reverse-painted lamps. Handel also made some leaded glass lamps. The company is a prime example of fine American quality craftsmanship.

Handel bases were most commonly made of a zinc alloy, spelter with a bronze patina or finish. Some were made of genuine bronze. The marking was commonly the company name on the bottom of the base. The markings consisted of raised letters and/or a label. Sometimes the marking would be underneath the base or sometimes on top of the the base. Lamp shades were marked on metal components and/or on the glass itself. Some of the glass pieces are signed by the artists.

Many of the medium to larger Handel lamp bases were wired with multiple sockets which were operated by pull chains that had small and various shaped pull balls on the ends of the chain.

It has long been a common practice to match slag glass lamp shades, Tiffany type shades and others to various lamp bases that were not the original. Another common practice has been to place an unsigned shade on a signed Handel lamp base and pass the entire lamp off as a "Handel". Many if not most lamps and shades are referred to as Handel lamps simply because the style is similar to that of an original Handel lamp. Experts today suggest that about 90% of all lamps called Handel were not actually made by Handel. There are many lamps that are signed but that are not authentic. Identification of Handel leaded lamps is a subjective process that few people are qualified to do.

Given the company's history it may be difficult to prove the negative: i.e. that a particular lamp is NOT a Handel. But as usual, money speaks and you will find that a Handel lamp and shade with correct markings, attributes and documentation commands a very premium price as compared to any lamp that is "attributed to Handel".

For instance, some of Handel's small and simple desk and simple piano lamps have recently sold for around $500. Generally the more complex ones sell for over $2,000. There are some rare ones that have sold for over $80,000.

Some Handel glass artists are highly regarded and their works bring a premium price. Their signatures can be seen on some Handel lamp shades. Among these Handel artists are Bailey, Bedigie, Broggi, Gubisch, Matzow, Palme, and Parlow and Runge.

This is the fifth of the Cinq Robaiyat d'Omar Khayyâm (Five Omar Khayām Rubaiyat), a song cycle by Jean Cras, great French composer (1879-1932), also involved in mathematics (geometry instead of algebra - for Khayyâm), and colonel in the French navy (he took part in the First world war). Henri Duparc helped him to chose his life, and advised him not to give up the army - and he could write, however, quite an amount of music, despite his large responsibilities and the agitated times he had to go through. His style can change a lot among his works. In some ones, Cras used a French postromantic tone, lyric and soft, very melancholic, with little originality (Cello Sonata) ; in others, he explored the best French way in harmonies (those French works, nevertheless, were deeply influenced by wagnerism), as the last chamber Fauré, or Chausson, for instance (Piano Trio) ; lastly, a large part of his music uses debussyst colours and techniques (with a more tonal language, as in his opera Polypheme and in his mélodies). The Cinq Robaiyat d'Omar Khayyâm belong to the debussyst part of Cras, but this last one, based on only two chords (and an oriental motive which appears one time for two pairs of chords), is very original and personal. The persian Omar Khayyâm (1048-1131) was above all distinguished as a mathematician and astronomer. Cras chose his quatrains, translated by Franz Toussaint - most of them seems to me to be apocryphal, since Khayyâm was given much more than he wrote ...
